Curriculum and Audit Monitoring Visit by Tresham College Inspectors

Partner and Association with Tresham

Impact Training Services has worked with Tresham for the last 7 years. The relationship was formed through the joint delivery of an ESF funded project to build assessor and management capacity in the care sector. Since then they have worked in a sub-contract role with Tresham to deliver NVQs through Train to Gain funding and apprenticeships in Health and Social Care. With the changes in funding the company is shifting its work from NVQ only delivery to apprenticeship training.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The quality of Teaching and Learning is good. In the best sessions teaching is well planned, effectively resourced and targeted effectively at the individual learner. Questioning is mainly effective and learners participate and engage with learning well. Learners are encouraged to and enthusiastically draw upon their growing experience of working in the Health an Social Care sector to evidence, contextualize, and apply their learning within sessions with their Assessor. Assessors have high expectations of learners who respond through their very high level of engagement, participation and enthusiasm. Learners are well able to assess and articulate their own learning and can identify what they need to do to improve and how this could be achieved.

 Leadership and Management

Impact Training has a very enthusiastic, dedicated and committed staff team, who acknowledge the impact of the effective team culture focused on continuous improvement embedded at the centre and led very effectively by Lynn and Carol, with their well-developed leadership skills and a clear vision, drive, focus and direction for the company.

"For many years I have worked within the care field, Domiciliary Homecare for various agencies  [some good, some bad]. Ive worked within local Daycentres for LD`s. Worked with Mental illness, Terminal illness, also worked as an independant Support Careworker.
Through my work I`ve gained many practical skills and experiences however I had not been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to gain any academic qualifications or recognition. After so many years of doing the job I became quite complacent, set in my ways which in turn has resulted in me not acheiving my full potential, I was becoming a plodder lacking in drive.

Many of the methods that I have and still use although I know they work , until I studied the NVQ, did not know `WHY` they worked? `HOW`certain practices came about? With the guidance from my NVQ assessor I was familiarised with many theories ie- `The Erickson Theorie`. `The Maslow Pyramid`..This made me inquisitive to what other theories  there are out there, theories  that not only confirm that the practices I already  use  to  benefit  the service users are the right ones , but the course also enlightened me to other concepts , methods , current legislation and care standards.. I found myself researching about various methods and practices. At times some of the information I read and took in, some I was in a muddle about ,some went right over my head, but all was soon put into order and perspective with the patience of my NVQ assessor. The assessor was never more than a phone call away should I come accross problems with my studying and understanding.

Prior to starting the course although I was confident with my practical abilities, I was very unsure about my ability to gain academic recognition. At 50 years of age study seemed out of my reach, something that had passed me by. Also at times seemed a silly thing to even consider. At no point during my years as a carer/support worker ,although I felt I was good at my job, had I realised that there was theories supporting my practices and that told me `Yes, I am doing it right`!  My confidence now given a huge boost I couldnt help thinking up my own Theory that - further study would bring me more knowledge, understanding, enhance my  thinking skills and allow me to develop my practice  to the benefit of the service users that I will work with in future years..

On completing my NVQ 3 in Health & Social Care with Impact Training Services, I am proud of myself but the studying had come to an end!  There was a gap...A gap I feel needs to be addressed.  A hunger to learn more!
I applied to Northampton University to study a Foundation Degree in Health & Social Care. I am now looking forward to the challenge of further study in September 2011 at the university to enhance my abilities to do the work that I am devoted too."

Wish me Luck !

Yours
